Your riding hat is one of the most important pieces of equestrian safety equipment. It is designed to help reduce the risk of head injury from a fall or kick and should be worn whenever riding or handling horses. No helmet can guarantee protection in every circumstance, but a well‑fitted hat offers the best possible support in the event of an accident.

Head shapes vary, and different manufacturers use slightly different internal profiles. Your size may change between brands and even between styles from the same brand. A properly fitted riding hat should feel snug and secure without creating pressure points or discomfort.

At Leonard Coombe, we believe professional fitting is essential for rider safety. For this reason, we do not sell riding hats for mail order. Hats are available in‑store or via click‑and‑collect from our Newton Abbot store, where they can be fitted and checked by a trained member of the team.

Our hat fitting team includes staff with over 20 years of experience and manufacturer‑specific training. During a fitting, we will measure, assess and try several helmets to find the best match for your head shape and discipline. We usually recommend wearing the chosen hat around the shop for at least 15 minutes to confirm comfort.

Please note: For safety reasons, we cannot accept returns on riding hats or helmets once they have left the shop unless they are faulty.

Body protectors are designed to absorb impact from a fall or kick, helping to reduce the severity of injury. They are widely used for eventing, show jumping, backing young horses and hacking, and more riders are choosing to wear them in everyday situations.

Modern body protectors are lighter, more flexible and more comfortable than older designs, making them easier to wear for longer periods. Many riders find they can ride more positively and confidently when they know they have additional protection.

Body protectors should generally be replaced every 3–5 years or sooner if they become damaged. Over time, the foam’s impact absorption properties can decline. After a heavy fall, the foam should return to its original shape within around 30 minutes. If a dent remains, that area has lost its protective ability and the garment should be replaced.

Garments bearing obsolete standards such as Level 5 or 7, Class 1–3, or BETA 2000 Level 1–3 should no longer be worn. Riders should choose a garment certified to the current BETA 2018 Standard to ensure up‑to‑date protection.

A good fit is essential for both comfort and safety. We stock a wide range of sizes and back lengths so we can match the garment to your body shape and riding needs.

Our trained fitting team offers a body protector fitting service at our Newton Abbot store. Fitting is free of charge when you purchase a garment from us. A £10 fitting fee applies if you choose not to buy on the day.

During a fitting, we will check that the garment covers the correct areas without restricting movement. Fit can vary between brands and styles, so trying several options is important. Many protectors are available in different back lengths, allowing us to refine the fit for your height and riding position.
